I admit this review is not going to get the love and attention it deserves. Dayton Ward is a Star Trek author deserves my full attention. That said, I am less than a month away from PKD Festival, and my time is draining quickly. Dayton Ward is one of the best of the regular authors still contributing to the expanded Star Trek universe. The authors writing Star Trek novels Greg Cox, Una McCormick, David Mack, and Dayton Ward all bring something different and fantastic to these Trek novels.
Ward often weaves elements of existing canon and expands on little details. An underrated novel of his is The Discovery tie-in Desperate Measures, when he took characters introduced in ST Discovery and put them into the events that serve as a prequel to the events of the TOS episode Conscience of the King. That was a brilliant example of expanded universe doing the job well.
Pliable Truths does this well by taking events that lead up to DS9 and adding details come from the recent Animated series Lower Decks to tell a meaningful story that adds depth to TNG and DS9. Without spoiling events, Picard’s part of this tale builds excellently a traumatic episode that was recent history in the timeline of the show.
Dayton Ward is a good storyteller, and an excellent Trek expert so this all works together to make a fun novel for fans.
